In short: The turbocharger consists of a compressor and turbine, which are linked by a so-called shaft. During operation, the engine produces exhaust gases, which are then directed to the turbine, driving it – this generates the necessary energy for the compressor. Compared to naturally aspirated engines, the turbo stands out with a lower consumption – as parts of the exhaust gases otherwise emitted into the atmosphere are redirected and converted into energy for more vehicle performance.
Convenient thanks to plug&play solution
Generally, turbochargers are plug&play models: meaning that the old turbocharger is replaced with the new one, without the need for any modifications afterwards. Except for the ball-bearing EFR turbos, the other models are sleeve-bearing, which are also repairable or refurbishable. Such plug&play solutions are particularly popular in tuning because they can also be installed by hobby mechanics with little experience.
Depending on the model, the charger fits 1:1 and is simply replaced with the original. All connections are like the original, except for the turbo inlet, which may be slightly larger. The software must also be adapted to the respective turbo. With the right ECU adjustment, up to 300HP is possible depending on the 1.8T Borgwarner upgrade turbocharger.

When an upgrade turbocharger is installed, it makes sense to use the following components: A silicone intake hose, so that the original intake hose contracts and throttles performance; larger intercoolers, to better cool down the heated air and get more oxygen into the combustion chamber. Larger fuel injectors, a larger fuel pump, upgrade manifold for more throughput, a larger downpipe, and a sports catalytic converter to reduce the back pressure of the turbo are also applied.
