Garrett is among the few turbocharger manufacturers that subject the turbos to several qualification tests, meaning you always receive a top product. Tests include a 1000-hour durability test on an engine in a Garrett Engineering Lab, thrust bearing test, maximum tolerance of the bearing system check, material fatigue, and a vibration test, among others.

The Garrett GT and GTX series are all double ball bearing, finely balanced, and oil- and water-cooled. There is also the older T series which are mostly journal bearing. The GTX series differs from the standard GT by having a special, larger compressor wheel with more blades, leading to increased performance and slightly better response. Its crucial for the ball-bearing turbochargers not to receive too much oil pressure. Hence, an  oil restrictor with a 0.9mm hole is used. A ball-bearing turbo typically responds about 400-500 RPM sooner than a journal-bearing one.
