    The connecting rod for a smooth oscillating motion

    As the linkage between piston and crankshaft, the 1.8T connecting rod is designed to convert the reciprocating movements of the cylinders into a circular motion due to its construction. This leads to its actual purpose: to drive the crankshaft. Due to the high stress, you'll find here exclusively tested models made of solid steel that promise quality over a long period of time. The connecting rod, or con rod, is thus constructed in a way that its two connecting ends perfectly interlock with the other elements without jamming due to the dynamic movements. The connection to the piston is referred to as the con rod foot and the one to the crankshaft as the so-called con rod head.

     

    Do not be surprised if you order connecting rods and the elements are lighter than expected. Because the rod is constantly redirecting the linear up and down movements of the piston. Stresses in the form of bending and buckling as well as tension and pressure are applied to the individual parts, which is why the connecting rods were designed to be lighter, but still promise maximum strength.

     

    In addition to the suitable connecting rod, of course, the necessary connecting pieces are needed when you want to install the rods in accordance with regulations. Therefore, pay attention to the product descriptions and the included additional material in our shop.     Recognizing a con rod damage

    Primary task: to convert reciprocating movements into circular ones – at the point where this happens, the con rod and crankshaft are connected by a ring, in which respective con rod shells are located. If, after years of use, wear and tear or even a breakage of these shells occurs, it indicates the well-known con rod bearing damage. An annoying problem, but one that can be solved quite quickly – a new con rod from our online shop is easy to find and arrives securely packaged directly to your home!

     

    A 1.8T connecting rod is a solid component, where no additional drilling should be done. Also, do not be surprised if the connecting rods bend slightly over time. Due to continuous movements, round openings can sometimes become slightly oval – this has nothing to do with incorrect engine performance and is related to the rod itself. While replacing it is not a problem, preventing damage shouldn't be either. With prescribed maintenance, con rods usually operate smoothly up to 300,000 kilometers – if early wear is noticed, it usually has the following causes:

     

    • Operation with perpetually too low oil pressure

    • Incorrect replacement or refilling of engine oil

     

    The con rod is normally equipped with a hollow channel to ensure the transport of lubricants to the piston pin. Here too, always refill according to the instructions. Another often seen problem is an incorrect replacement of the oil filter, which can lead to contact between the bearing and crankshaft – the end for the engine.
